Has anyone tried or had any success with freezing coffee on the day of collection and then using it later?

I am thinking that this would allow for larger batches to be processed than the amount collected on a daily basis

    Hi Daren,

yes we’ve frozen fresh coffee a few times and had no problems with contamination so I think in general that it’s process which works.

It can, however, take quite a long time for large amounts to defrost – more than 2 days for a bin bag full for example. In this time, there is some coffee around the outside of the frozen mass that defrosts quicker than the coffee in the frozen core. This coffee is therefore susceptible to mould starting to grow whilst ytou’re waiting for the rest, so ideally you would freeze the coffee in small (no more than 5kg) quantities in order that they defrost a bit quicker.

    hope that makes sense!

    Quick update:

I have found that the best way is to sift the coffee on the day of collection, breaking up all the pucks and lumps before freezing.

keep bag sizes down as you have recomended, though in my case im keeping them to around 3 kg to help defrost quicker.

the frozen exhibits brown liquid in the bag, but from previous posts this shouldn’t be a problem.

I would attach a picture but cant work out how?

I am moving them onto fruiting in a few days so I will keep this post updated.

    Hi Daren,

great to hear of your experiments and nice tip on sieving the coffee first – makes perfect sense.

Look forward to seeing how your bags fruit. You can post photos by using the little image icon in the forum reply editor, like this:

    Hi Daren,

I’ve just tried logging in as a course user and it seems the image icon displays in a slightly different place than it does for me as an admin – it’s at the top left of the editor:

If that doesn’t work, you can also use http://imgur.com/ Just click the green ‘New Post’ button at the top and upload your image(s), then use the link they give you to paste in here.

    Sorry it’s such a pain!

    best wishes, Adam

ok, lets try again, the add media button only seems to be for your use

Imgur was more use, the red tape was fresh coffee, white tape is the frozen

They’re looking great Daren! Very healthy

They could possibly do with a bit more incubation time in order to colonise fully to the bottom – unless they’ve been stalled at this point for a week or more already, which might be a sign they’re struggling to get enough air exchange at the bottom of the bag. If this is the case, you could cut/poke a small hole in the bottom of the bag on each size to help them grow that last little bit.

Otherwise, looking great and not long til you’ll have some mushies growing!
