Hi, I will be starting to collect coffee soon, but these are grounds from a drip coffee maker and tend to be very saturated. How do you suggest draining the water but still keeping the coffee sterile?

    Thanks.

    Hih Tara,
Great to hear that you are about to get growing.
With regards to extruding excess water from wet coffee grounds, it is not something that we have done ourselves before. We’ve always preffered to source grounds from espresso machines as they are not as wet, but I have seen it done elsewhere by pressing the excess water using a wine press or apple press. To keep the grounds clean you could possibly wrap them in clean muslin cloth and then press the water out.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on as I’m sure there are others with the same issue,

    Tara,

I mix hardwood pellets in with wet coffee, if I have to use wet coffee.

Hardwood pellets are typically used for fuel, but they’re great for adjusting the for wet substrate. They’re processed into pellets (extruded) in a high heat environment and are completely dry so they’re very good at resisting any other contaminants, if they’re kept dry.

As well, the hardwood is typically completely natural and contains no chemical additives. Finally, they’re relatively cheap, at about $5 for 20kg (in Canada).

Great tip Anthony! Never used those before but they sound like a perfect addition for wet coffee and are obviously sterilised under high heat and pressure when they are made. Would probably help to break up the density of mix a bit too.

Did anyone try to get the water out by simple wash machine, i am guessing spinning for 1 mins should be good to get most water out. take a try. more simple

Antony: if adding wood pallet is your solution, any idea how to separate those pellet out of the ground? or just leave it there for future growth?
