    Hi,

In the market, there are many gusseted mushroom grow bags with filters and the popular size used by many seems to be  8″ X 4.8″ X 19″. After going through the course videos, there are some questions which I have and hope fellow community members can help:

    1. If using a  8″ X 4.8″ X 19″ bag, is there a minimum or maximum amount of substrate that one must place in the bag?

    2. If using a bag of a different size, let’s say a smaller one like 4″ X 3″ X 18″, how do we estimate what is an appropriate amount of substrate to place?

    Thank you!

I think that the bags must be full for 75% substrate and spawn together

    Hi Jon,

When using coffee grounds in bags with filters you would tend to fill them to around 50% full, in order to allow sufficient space in the top of the bag for air exchange. You will find that if you fill them too much above that, the spawn can sometimes struggle to grow towards the bottom of the bag. This is particularly the case with coffee as the substrate is quite dense, so air exchange becomes even more important than with something like straw which has lots of channels for air exchange.

    Hope this helps,

Is there a minimum amount you should put in a bag? My bags look about the same size as those in the video, but I only have 180g of spawn so I was thinking of using just 1kg of coffee. Will this work?

    Hi Alison,

Yes, definitely best to base the amount of coffee you add primarily on the amount of spawn you have available.

It is generally good practice to fill a bag like that to at least 1/3 full in order to create a combined mass inside the bag, but you could fold the bag seams in a little along the sides to make the bag inner bag volume smaller.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on.

So when you mentioned something like 50% full would be a based on the height of the coffee ground and spawn combined? and the height to be taken as 100% would be the from the base of the bag to the bottom of the filter?

    Hi Jon,

Yes the 50% full would be based on the coffee and spawn combined mix, and 100%  would be from the base of the bag, right to the very top of the bag where it is sealed/closed up. This usually tends to be just under where the filter is positioned.

    best wishes,

    Adam
