Yes unfortunately, as with growing all food crops, it only really becomes profitable when done at a pretty big scale – as the profit per kg is not huge, especially when you start taking into account all the time you need to put in. Although mushrooms are more profitable than most crops they still require industrial scale production to yield good profits…and that kind of scale requires huge investment in machinery.

The big problem is the high cost of living in most developed countries – it almost impossible to meet such high costs of living by growing and selling food. I often think it works best as a part time income/sideline business alongside something else which can help you to pay the bills.
Hope this helps – I don’t want to put you off, but feel it’s good to be honest about the reality of growing food as your sole income.
