    hi,

the cupboard I use to put my bags in for incubation is around 24c . I was thinking, will the internal temperature of the bags be much higher and result in the temperature being too high? I suppose I could put a probe in and get some tape to cover the puncture?

    Hi Chris,

Apologies for the slow response. Yes you are absolutely right – the internal temperature of the substrate will be a few degrees higher than the cupboard due to the growth activity of the mycelium (and any competitor moulds).

Depending on the size of the bags and the stage of colonisation you will normally find the internal temperature to be around 3-6 C hotter than the outside bag temperature. We have only found increased contamination rates when the room temperature climbs above 27C, so at 24C you are at a perfect temperature for fast colonisation.

    Best wishes,

    Adam

As I am following the online course from the Caribbean, I wander what the incubation temperature for the different species of mushroom are. Is there a chart whith the information?

    Hi Alvin,

apologies for the slow response – we’ve been away on holiday over the Christmas period.

The incubation temperature would depend on the strain that you grow with to some extent, but for the majority of Oyster mushroom strains (warm and cool weather varities) the temperature of the room in which the bags are incubating should be between 20-24C. The warmer weather strains may tolerate it slightly higher than this. It could be worth checking with the spawn supplier you use as they may have ideal parameters for each strain.

    best wishes, Adam

    Hi  Adam,

Is it important to have a stable temperature during inoculation? I’m finding some possible spots to start my first trials, but they’re all exposed to temperature drops during the night. Would this be a problem or not so much?

    Regards,

    Caspar

    Hi Caspar,

it’s best to have a stable temperature if possible because fluctations tend to result in condensation inside the grow bag and this, in turn, can cause increased chances of contamination. Cooler night time temperatures will also slow down the mycelial growth and give more of a chance for competitor mould to colonise the substrate instead of your Oyster mycelium.

Small fluctuations of 2-4 C should be ok, but anything more than that could cause problems.

    Best wishes,
    Adam
