I did the course and grew a 2.5 kg bag of coffee with 500g spawn and sawdust. The incubation process went well and I ended up with loads of mycelium. But then the mushrooms did not fruit at all.

The green fungi only appeared after a couple of weeks when the mushrooms were not growing. The substrate had gone rock solid during the incubation period. Is that how it should be?

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? For the fruiting, I left the bag in my utility room. But perhaps there was not enough light? Or perhaps the holes I cut in the bag were too large? I did keep spraying it 2-3 times a day.

    Hi Marjan,

sorry to hear that your first bag didn’t grow properly.  I’d be happy to try and help troubleshoot and work out what went wrong – do you have any photos that might help to work it out?

The easiest way to upload/share them is to use http://imgur.com/ Just click the green ‘New Post’ button at the top and upload your image(s), and then use the link they give you to paste in here.

It’s possible that the green mould was present inside the bag, but not visible, and then when the bag was opened and sprayed it began to take over.

It’s normal for the substrate to go solid when colonised – this is the mycelium binding all the ingredients together. And it doesn’t sound like you put the bag in a bad environment – the mushrooms don’t need much light at all, but if they didn’t start to grow after full colonisation, it could be a sign of low humidity or problems inside the substrate with the mould.

Did you use fresh coffee and good quality spawn?

    best wishes,

    Adam

I have uploaded my images, but can’t work out how to paste them here?

    Hi Marjan,

The place you uploaded them on Imgur should give you a link, and then you just cut and paste that link into the reply in this thread (you can use Ctrl+C to copy it, and then Ctrl+V to paste it). Or you can email them to us at support@growmushroomsoncoffee.com if you prefer
