Hello, would like to share the progress of the first cultures over here. Wondering if someone can help answer a couple of questions.

Here is the first culture bags and their characteristics

    • Pl. ostreatus
    • Environment temperature range: 23-28 °C
    • Environment humidity range: 67-70 %RH
    • Each bag contains
      • 1Kg cofee grounds
      • 100gr straw
      • 200gr spawn (20%)
    • Mixed and bagged August 30 2017

Based on the items above and the video below: should I be concerned with the poor mycelium colonization at the bottom of the bag?

Now to the second culture bags:

    • Pl. ostreatus
    • Environment temperature range: 23-28 °C
    • Environment humidity range: 67-70 %RH
    • Each bag contains
      • 2Kg coffee grounds
      • 400gr straw
      • 166gr spawn (8.3%)
    • Mixed and bagged September 5 2017

Everything is white in there. Maybe way too white? Should I be concerned of white mold? There are like pieces of cotton, so I don’t know if this is the way the Pleurutus looks like at this stage, or if there is another organism taking control.

    Hi Jose,

thanks for sharing your photos and film of your first bags, which look really healthy.

No need to be too concerned about the bottom of the bag, it’s justa sign that the substrate was slightly too wet and so hasn’t colonised at the bottom where the excess water collected.  Just make slightly less wet mix next time, but it shouldn’t cause a problem in this bag which looks very strong and healthy and is now ready to fruit.

With the 2nd bag, the fluffy white is Oyster mycelium, and I htin overall that the bag is on it’s way to colonisation and will probably become a stonger white over the next few days. If any of the grey/white growth turns blue or green then that would be a problem with green mould, but I think it looks more like Oyster mycelium.

Nice work! Let us know how the fruiting stage goes 🙂
